International protection in Italy safeguards people who cannot return to their country because they face a risk of persecution or serious harm. During the procedure, applicants may remain in Italy in the circumstances provided by law and have access to reception services, healthcare and education. If the application is rejected, an appeal may be lodged within the deadline specified in the decision. Recognition of refugee status or subsidiary protection allows the person to reside and work in Italy, apply for family reunification and, once the relevant requirements are met, apply for Italian citizenship. In particular circumstances, a form of national protection, such as special protection, may also be granted.
