Residence Permit for Cohabitation with an Italian Citizen

What is commonly referred to as a “residence permit for cohabitation with an Italian citizen” is a residence document issued for family reasons. It allows a foreign national to live legally in Italy together with a family member who is an Italian citizen.

Depending on the circumstances, it may be requested by the Italian citizen’s spouse, registered civil partner, children, parents and, in certain cases, other relatives up to the second degree who genuinely live with the Italian citizen.

An unmarried partner may also apply when there is a stable and long-term relationship that can be properly documented. However, simply living at the same address or being engaged is not always sufficient. The competent Police Headquarters (Questura) may verify that both the relationship and the cohabitation are genuine.

To obtain the permit, the applicant must provide evidence of the family relationship or stable partnership, the identity of the people concerned and their actual cohabitation. The application must be submitted to the competent Questura.

This residence document allows the holder to live legally in Italy, work and access essential services, including healthcare. The type and duration of the document issued may vary depending on the family relationship and the applicant’s individual circumstances.
